Ellen was born in Wellsville on January 28, 1867, the daughter of Utah pioneers John and Emma Eckersley Stoddard. At 18 she married Utah industrialist David Eccles, and in later years they lived in their home at 250 West Center Street in Logan. They had nine children, Marriner, Marie, Spencer, Jessie, Emma, George, Nora, Ellen and Willard. David and Ellen taught their sons and daughters the value of hard work, honesty and self-discipline. Her husband’s untimely death in 1912 left Ellen with eight children still at home.
During her lifetime, Ellen honored David’s admonition to his family to return something to the community and, in emulation of Ellen’s personal generosity, her descendants have established a significant record of philanthropy in education, science, medicine, arts, athletics, environment and historic preservation, thus enriching the lives of many in Utah and beyond. Cache Valley’s beautiful Ellen Eccles Theatre bears witness to this heritage.
